Many people, year after year, diagnose themselves with illnesses or diseases, instead of going to the doctor. But the truth is, only doctors can properly diagnose you. Not everyone went to medical school, so not everyone can diagnose themselves. That's why it's very important to visit doctors every time you feel you have a medical issue.
No one really knows why people diagnose themselves. Maybe it's the high cost of visiting doctors or embarrassment about a certain medical issues. But there are some problems that arise with self-diagnosis. First, you can confuse a minor illness with a major illness.
Another problem is that you are likely to diagnose yourself with a worse disease than you actually have. You are not an expert, you have not been to medical school and even though you may watch a lot of medical television shows, that does not qualify you to diagnose yourself. Only doctors can make the right evaluations about your illness. Doctors also have numerous knowledge and instruments to help decipher your symptoms. Not everyone has an x-ray machine or stethoscope in their homes, only doctors have them. And that's why only doctors can make decisions based on your symptoms. For example, you may diagnose yourself with a fever caused by strep throat, when in reality you have meningitis. Just because you know what a fever is like, doesn't mean you know where its coming from.
You may not even be aware of the factors that doctors evaluate before making their assessments, including facial color, weight and plenty of other physical aspects that you aren't aware of. Only doctors can diagnose your different symptoms, as much as you think you could. It is very important that even though you think you can diagnose yourself, you open your mind to the possibility of visiting a doctor.
It is very common that when we get sick we like to diagnose ourselves. Whether it's the fear of going to the doctor, the cost of doctors, or just plain laziness, we would rather diagnose ourselves than seek professional help. But self diagnosis often leads to misdiagnosis and your health problems could worsen. You must remember to take the right precautions when dealing with your health.
